MIDDLE SCHOOL

“Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” — Lou Holtz

Welcome to Middle School: The ‘Discoverers’ Phase (Years 7–10)

Middle School at Coolum Beach Christian College is a dynamic time of transition. As students move from childhood to adolescence, they build upon the solid foundations laid in Primary School, developing the essential skills of independence, drive, resilience, and focus.

Early adolescence mirrors early childhood in its complexity and its profound impact on long-term educational success. Knowing this, we have intentionally created an inspiring, supportive environment tailored specifically to the unique emotional and academic needs of teenagers. We engage our students by guiding them to become active, enthusiastic participants in their own learning journey—an environment where both the heart and the brain matter.

Our Curriculum: Inspiring a Love of Learning

To ignite passion and maintain a lifelong love of learning, our innovative Middle School curriculum connects the classroom to the wider world. Aligned with the Australian National Framework, our units create a perfect balance between explicit teaching and hands-on innovation, ensuring students are thoroughly prepared for senior schooling and future university pathways.

Nurturing the Whole Child: Connection & Well-being

Life at CBCC is exciting and purposeful, designed to help students discover their identity, shape their values, and pursue academic excellence within a safe, caring community.

Because Middle School students frequently move between specialized subject teachers throughout the day, we have established a robust, multi-layered support system to ensure no student feels lost in the crowd.

The Power of a Double-Stream College

We are uniquely a double-stream College, meaning we maintain just two classes per year level. This intentional design fosters a close-knit environment where every single child is known by name, recognized for their individuality, and nurtured in both their academic progress and character development.

Wrap-Around Pastoral Care

  • Pastoral Care (PC) Teacher: Every class is assigned a dedicated PC Teacher who meets with them daily. Acting much like a traditional homeroom teacher, their core focus is the daily well-being, security, and mentoring of their specific class.

  • Heart Advocate: Guiding the bigger picture, a designated Heart Advocate looks after the well-being and pastoral needs of the entire year level.

  • A Connected Team: Our Secondary teaching team operates in constant, close communication. This collaborative approach ensures that both the academic progress and the emotional well-being of every student are tracked and supported holistically.

Signature Middle School Programmes

At CBCC, education extends far beyond the four walls of a classroom. We offer distinct, purposeful programmes designed to grow our students’ character, faith, and physical resilience.

Living Waters Surf Academy (Years 8-9)

Our coastal backyard becomes a specialized training ground through the Living Waters Surf Academy. Integrated directly into the Year 8 and 9 curriculum, this unique program blends physical excellence and oceanography with character development and professional surf industry pathways.

Supported by elite mentorship—including partnerships with professional athletes like elite surfer Reef Heazlewood—students don’t just learn to navigate the waves; they explore the broader surf industry through specialized modules like board shaping, surf media, and ocean literacy. It is a powerful venue for building grit, humility, and spatial awareness, ensuring our teenagers are nurtured in both their physical development and their future career aspirations.

The Rite Journey (Year 9)

Adolescence is a complex time of transition, heavily influenced by modern youth culture. To partner with families during this pivotal phase, our Year 9 students participate in The Rite Journey. This transformative year-long programme guides students as they step away from childhood and aim forward toward adulthood.

Led by our Year 9 Heart Advocate and dedicated teachers, the programme focuses on “Conquering the 7 C’s”—Courage, Collaboration, Consideration, Compassion, Commitment, Connection, and Camp. Through meaningful ceremonies, classroom discussions, an external adult mentoring partnership, and outdoor challenges like the Year 9 Camp, students discover who they are, deepen their relationship with God, and learn to face the future with faith-driven resilience.

Service and Ministry (S.A.M.)

Our Service and Ministry (S.A.M.) framework teaches students to recognise that mission begins at home through acts of service that reflect Jesus’ model of servant leadership. Through local community service, students develop compassion while learning that mission involves action, humility, and love. Students are also challenged to explore how entrepreneurial thinking can address local, national, and global challenges, all grounded in Christian values and a heart to serve others.
